Welcome to Understanding the Mind
This unofficial website is dedicated to the book Understanding the Mind by Geshe Kelsang Gyatso. Buddhist psychology is a deep topic, but very necessary. It is necessary because the entire Buddhist enterprise stands or falls on the view that the mind is without beginning and without end.
We normally consider the extent of our existence as being bracketed by the moment of conception and the moment of death, which is very much consistent with the prevalent materialist worldview that says we cease to exist when our body dies.
If the Buddhist view of the mind is incorrect, then I would go so far as to say that all of Buddha’s teachings are without purpose, since release from samsara—the cycle of uncontrolled death and rebirth—is the central aim of all Buddhist practice.
